Need to find those Km or Wt articles encouraging all to read the old publications!
by stuckinarut2 ini have been dropping comments to a few re some classic old beliefs and teachings etc... and when asked "where did you read that, or how come you are saying such and such?
" i have replied "well, you remember we have often been told to study and research our old 'theocratic history' and 'old gems' of material?....
now though i have been challenged to prove where this has been printed!.

Smoking

is this true?
if so, what was the reasoning behind this?.

My dad smoked for about a year after his baptism. In fact, he lit up minutes after becoming baptised. Smoking was regarded as something that was rather immature, so ministerial positions would not be awarded until the smoker had quit. However, a number of German PO's had been in office before the societies total ban and they continued to smoke and retain their PO status up until around 1960.

Using Disgust

good catch.
disgust is an interesting emotion and it is linked to all sorts of behavior.

Maybe some disgust is learned but does not serve us well. I once observed 2 witnesses noisily recoiling at a hotplate of black sausage in a self-service restaurant. Other diners served themselves quite happily.
Yet again a natural disgust, say a reaction to contaminated food, can protect us from harm.

My first post: Pet Peeves from my JW past

my story is pretty much like everyone elses with little variance, but i thought id add a few details that especially tormented me when i was in.
im sure these are familiar, im afraid this is a bit of a rant.. --paradise: the constant chatter about a perfect world when most in the hall were not even slightly interested in taking care of the earth now.

discussions have arisen where a bro has firmly stated that "the society has never stated 1975" , and that "we" never said the system would be over in a specific time.. i know there was also the article re education in 1968 ish?.

their view of apostates seems to be out of the realm of the ordinary, the natural.
its as if the words of apostates are supernatual or spiritistic as if apostates are some kind of jedi knights who can slightly wave their hands or twitch their eyes and bring one under a spell.

Does anybody remember the picture (artist illustration) in the Watchower in the late 80’s of the lady who received some kind of apostate material in the mail? If I remember correctly, she had that classic JW housewife look – like June Cleaver. She had the piece of mail extended at arm’s length and she was turning her head away from it and kind of holding her nose up in the air as if she were holding three-day-old road kill. She was holding the mail over the trash can about to drop it in?
